Dear Participants of the 11th Symposium,

As Chairman of the Organizing Committee of 11th International Symposium of Continuous Surface Mining to be organized on 25-27th June, 2012 by Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering, University of Miskolc (Hungary), I am glad to greet participants of this meeting from all over the world.

Series of these meetings began in 1986, a little bit more than a quarter of a century ago. All the former symposiums were organized by universities, which are institutions of educating mining engineers:

· 1st (1986): University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada)

· 2nd (1988): Texas A&M University (Austin, Texas, U.S.A.)

· 3rd (1991): CS Mining Association (Prague, Czech Republic)

· 4th (1995): RWTH Aachen University (Aachen, Germany)

· 5th (1998): Wroclaw Technical University (Wroclaw, Poland)

· 6th (2001): TU Bergakademie Freiberg (Freiberg, Germany)

· 7th (2004): University of Missouri-Rolla (Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S.A.)

· 8th (2007): RWTH Aachen University (Aachen, Germany)

· 9th (2008): University of Petrosany (Petrosany, Romania)

· 10th (2010): TU Bergakademie Freiberg (Freiberg, Germany)

Hundreds of specialists took part at these great events from numerous parts of the world. They visited these meetings to read their papers dealing with different problems of mining engineering, to exhibit their products, or just to listen to these demonstrations and meet their colleagues.

Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering of University of Miskolc is glad to organize the next symposium of this great meeting. The faculty, which is the successor of the first mining school in Europe, established in Selmecbánya (Schemnitz, Banska Stiavnica) in 1735. Although numerous other kinds of specialists, such as mechanical engineers, metallurgical and materials engineers, lawyers, economists, teachers, musicians, etc. are being educated at our university, mining engineering remained a very important field of education.

Our school expects and is looking forward to welcome you at the Symposium.

Personal note from Prof. Pierre Mousset Jones (March 2010): Here (https://www.unrsearch.com/applicants/jsp/shared/position/JobDetails_css.jsp) is a job description for an Assistant/Associate Professor position to replace me. I will be half time starting in July. I will be teaching etc. during the spring semester for three years, to help phase in, if needed, the new faculty. There is an interest to maintain the mine ventilation expertise in the department and make use of the excellent department mine ventilation laboratory. There are a number of operating underground mines in the state, with the potential for others in the future. If you would like more information on the positions please email or phone me.

Federation of European Mineral Programs

FEMP is the organisation that co-ordinates the 2 year Eramus Mundus Minerals and Environmental Program (EMMEP) for students in Mining- and Geotechnical Engineering, Mineral Processing, Recycling and related academic studies. There are three different specialisations; accommodating groups with 15 to 20 students each.

Participating students study together at universities in four different European countries for one of the two academic years. Joining the EMMEP program is an excellent opportunity to study abroad, meet foreign students, visit companies, and of course see a lot of Europe…

This initiative by the European minerals sector and related organisations gives the opportunity to the European-wide public to explore the world of minerals and discover more about an industry that affects every aspect of our lives.

This biannual event welcomed more than 30,000 visitors in over 100 sites in 17 European countries during its first edition in 2007. The European Minerals Day 2009 engaged children and adults at more than 160 sites in 27 countries.

Minerals play an essential role in our lives with 70% of EU manufacturing production depending on mined substances. The construction, chemicals, automotive, aerospace and machinery sectors, which provide a total added value of € 1324 billion and 30 million jobs all depend on access to raw materials.

In 2009, special attention was given to biodiversity. Quarries may host a variety of rare plant and animal species, and many companies were therefore proud to guide visitors along through rehabilitated areas. This and many more activities were aimed at raising awareness of this old, yet innovative and sustainable sector. Entertaining side activities such as fossil hunting, animations for children, jeep safaris, workshops etc. make European Minerals Day an unforgettable experience for people of all ages.

Survey of International Mining Engineering Programs (April 2010)

The Education Committee of the Society of Mining Professors (SOMP) is continuing to gather an up to date, and internationally comprehensive database of mining students, staff and graduates, in order to provide both educators and industry with a more factually-based assessment of the status of this education sector and trends in teaching and graduate numbers. The first such survey was conducted in February, 2008, and it is intended to survey international universities on an annual basis in the future.

This survey has been designed to be as simple as possible, so as to minimize the amount of time required to complete it. Copies of the processed survey results will be available to all contributors.

Thank you in advance, in anticipation of your co-operation and your contribution. If you are aware of other institutions in your country who may not have received this survey, it would be appreciated if you could forward the survey to them, or complete a survey on their behalf, with their agreement.

Please complete the survey in English.

If you have completed either the 2008 or 2009 surveys (including statistics up to end 2008), there is no need to repeat the historical statistical data in Part C, Q8. Simply complete the introductory Parts A and B, then skip straight to Part C, Q8 to provide the data for the latest completed year (2009). If this is the first return, please provide as much of the additional rows of historical statistical data as is readily available.

The department is evaluating how much time should be spent in the mining engineering degree program on teaching mining related computer software. Some of the problems being considered are, i) the growing amount of software which is used in mines, ii) the time spent teaching software to students is time not spent teaching the fundamentals of mine design etc., iii) the need for students to understand the theory behind the software and its limitations, and iv) the learning time needed by students to be able to use the software effectively in class projects.

The information you provide by completing this questionnaire will be compiled and summarized, and the results will be distributed to all who participated in the survey. In addition, at the next Society of Mining Professors meeting, in June, this topic is on the agenda and this information will be useful data for the discussion. Cooperation with People Friendship University of Russia (RUDN) and Tallinn University of Technology, Department of Mining

RUDN project: Elaboration of technology for development of ecologically safe oil shale mining.
The research will link with Tallinn University of Technology, Department of Mining scientists for assessing the quality and availability of ground water because its vulnerability to contamination requires adequately characterizing the geologic, geophysical, geotechnical and geochemical factors controlling subsurface fluid flow and contaminant dispersal. Although it is relatively easy to determine the average hydrologic properties of a rock mass or sediment, one of the greatest challenges to effective waste isolation lies in accurately characterizing hydrologic heterogeneity and preferential flow paths (for example, the one fracture, fault, or stream-channel deposit that may carry most of the contaminants). Also, predicting the long-term hydrologic behavior of aquifers and aquitards and the attenuation or degradation of toxic wastes requires an improved understanding of the physical, chemical, and biological processes controlling the evolution of hydrologic properties and fluid chemistry through time.
Determining the best technology application for any oil shale project depends on the location, the setting, and the composition of the target oil shale deposit(s) and requires individual design considerations to maximize its economics.

Short-term research projects of visiting doctoral students in Estonia

Doctoral study at Department of Mining, Tallinn University of Technology.

We invite international doctoral students’ for study and research which visits lasting from 3 to 10 months. DoRa-supported visiting doctoral students will be paid a monthly stipend in the amount of 6000 kroon (384 EUR) per month. The topics are Backfilling technologies, Mineral Processing, Environmental Protection, Underground and Open Mining Facilities.
